The Day I Chose Myself

A heartfelt story of how one decision can change your life forever.

Hand holding a beige card with "LOVE YOURSELF" text, set against a soft pink background, conveying a message of self-care.

Life often puts us at a crossroads where one path leads to what others expect from us, and the other — the harder one — leads to what our heart truly desires. For the longest time, I walked the first path, choosing to please everyone around me. But one day, something shifted. That was the day I chose myself.

It wasn’t a dramatic moment with violins playing in the background or the universe sending me signs. It was simple — a quiet realization during one of those countless nights when sleep felt like a distant dream. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and asked, “When was the last time I did something just for myself?”

The silence that followed was louder than any answer I could’ve given.

As women, daughters, mothers, or simply as human beings, we often wear so many roles that somewhere along the way, we forget there’s a person behind those roles — someone with dreams, desires, and a voice longing to be heard. I realized I had been living on autopilot, ticking off boxes of responsibilities, but never pausing to ask myself what I truly wanted.

That night, I promised myself that I would listen to my heart — even if it made me uncomfortable, even if the world didn't always approve.

Choosing myself didn’t mean abandoning my loved ones or responsibilities. It meant giving myself the same love, kindness, and importance that I so freely gave to others. It meant picking up that long-forgotten journal and pouring my heart into words. It meant taking long walks alone without feeling guilty. It meant setting boundaries, saying no when my heart said no, and saying yes to the small joys that made me feel alive.

The journey wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt — days when the old patterns whispered that I was being selfish. But then there were other moments — like the first time I finished writing a piece after years of leaving pages unfinished, or the warmth of sunlight on my face during a stolen hour of solitude. Those moments reminded me why this journey mattered.

I won’t say that choosing myself magically fixed everything. Life still throws its curveballs, and responsibilities still knock at my door. But now, I show up for them with a fuller heart — because a woman who chooses herself is a woman who finds her strength in the most unexpected places.

If you're reading this and something inside you stirs, maybe it's time for you to choose yourself too.

Start small. Take that break. Write that poem. Listen to your favourite song. Stand in front of the mirror and ask yourself — When was the last time you chose YOU?

Life will wait... but your heart won't.
