Healthy Eating Tips when you are Older


Healthy eating is important at every stage of life. Whether you're in your 60's, 70's, 80's or in 90's, your body needs healthy nutrition to keep working according to the age. Therefore, the healthy food choice is the smartest things to do when you are getting older.

You can follow these simple healthy eating tips when you are older.


1. Sufficient intake of fluids

As you grow older, the sense of thirst gets reduced which often leads to dehydration. Hence, drink water more often. Increase the consumption of 100% fresh fruit juices, low-fat or fat-free milk. The consumption of fluids keeps the body hydrated and energetic, which is highly needed when you are getting older.

If you're addicted to the beverages like tea and coffee, then it is advised to limit the consumption of these beverages as excess consumption can lead to cause

  • High Blood Pressure

  • Heartburn

  • Reduced Bone Strength

  • Anxiety

  • Sleeplessness

Moreover, an excess of anything is never a good option.


2. Eat Small , but do not starve

It happens that when you get older, you tend to lose your appetite. You may not have the same feeling of behaving like a foodie, which you were you used to be at your young times. It is okay, if you don't want to eat much like before, however, eat small and often rather than keeping yourself starving. You can also take the help of nutritious and healthy snacks like oatmeal, multigrain toasts, fruit salads, vegetable soup, etc.

It is important to note that "Do not skip your meals. Have your meals at least three times a day." If you do not want to cook, you can have ready-to-cook food as well. It is good to have the frozen ready-to-be-prepared foods instead of sitting idle with an empty stomach.

Please remember, energy is essential to keep a body moving.


3. Use Herbs and Spices in your food

Food may seem to lose its flavour as you get older. Hence, to add flavour to your meal you can add some healthy herbs and spices. These useful herbs and spices can act as a medicine for your health. Many herbs and spices regulate blood sugar levels and act as an anti-diabetic agent.



4. Enjoy variety of Vegetables

Plan your meal in a healthy way and choose from the wide variety of fresh vegetables. Get advice on how much to eat and which vegetable is good for you from your health care provider. An advice from the health care provider is important because every human body differs from each other.

Eating fibre-rich foods can help you to treat constipation. Constipation becomes common as you get older. Iron-based diet is good for the general health. Iron is good for energy and also for maintaining the haemoglobin levels.



5. Less Salt

An excess consumption of salt can be harmful to a health as it leads to an increased blood pressure and other heart-related ailments. Therefore, limit the consumption of salt in your foods, especially do not sprinkle an extra salt on the food when the food has already been served.



6. Maintain a healthy weight

As you grow older, it is important to maintain a healthy weight. If you are an overweight, your mobility may become a great concern. Moreover, much other health related disease will follow you despite eating a good diet. Therefore to maintain a healthy lifestyle despite being an oldie, seek a dietitian help and support, who can guide you further on how to make necessary changes in your diet and lifestyle to maintain a healthy diet.


Lastly, never treat yourself neglected and feel isolated. Old age is a sensitive stage of life which need some extra care like newborn baby. Therefore, lead a healthy life without anxiety and worry. Stay happy and Be Joyful.
