Becoming Your True Self: Have You Become the Person You Wanted to Be?

Reflecting on the journey to becoming your true self.

As we journey through life, we often set goals and envision the person we want to become. But somewhere along the way, amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s easy to lose sight of that vision. Have you ever paused to ask yourself, "Am I the person I wanted to be?" It’s a powerful question, one that can inspire reflection and, perhaps, a renewed sense of purpose.

Understanding the Journey

Life is a series of choices, and each choice shapes who we become. When I was younger, I had a clear image of who I wanted to be. I envisioned myself as someone who was confident, accomplished, and making a positive impact on the world. But as I grew older, I realized that becoming that person wasn't just about dreaming—it was about taking consistent, meaningful action.

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." This quote by Albert Schweitzer reminds us that true success comes from aligning our actions with our passions and values. It’s easy to get caught up in societal expectations and lose sight of what truly matters to us. But the real challenge is to stay true to ourselves and pursue what we genuinely love.

The Power of Self-Reflection

To determine if you’ve become the person you wanted to be, it’s important to engage in self-reflection. Take a moment to think about your life’s journey. Are you proud of the decisions you’ve made? Do your actions align with your core values and beliefs?

I remember a time when I felt lost in my career. I was working hard, achieving goals, but something was missing. It wasn’t until I took a step back and asked myself, "Is this really what I want?" that I realized I was chasing someone else’s dream, not mine. This moment of self-reflection was a turning point. I decided to realign my path with what truly mattered to me—creativity, connection, and making a difference.

Embracing Growth and Change

It's also essential to understand that the person you wanted to be may evolve over time. Life has a way of teaching us new lessons, and our aspirations might shift as we grow. The key is to embrace this change and allow yourself to evolve with it.

"We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty," said Maya Angelou. This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of growth. Becoming the person you want to be isn’t about staying the same—it’s about continuously growing, learning, and adapting.

There have been times when I faced unexpected challenges that pushed me in directions I hadn’t anticipated. But each time, I reminded myself that growth often comes from stepping out of our comfort zones. It’s through these experiences that we become more resilient, compassionate, and wiser.

Moving Forward with Purpose

If, after reflecting, you find that you haven’t become the person you wanted to be, don’t be disheartened. It’s never too late to make changes. The first step is to reconnect with your original vision. What did you truly want for yourself? What were your dreams and aspirations?

Once you’ve reconnected with that vision, start taking small, deliberate actions toward it. It could be as simple as setting aside time each day to work on a passion project or making a conscious effort to cultivate positive habits. Remember, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," as Lao Tzu wisely said.

Conclusion: What About You?

Have you become the person you wanted to be? Take a moment to reflect on your journey, your choices, and the person you’ve become. If you find that you’re not where you want to be, that’s okay. The beauty of life is that you have the power to change your path at any moment.
